What is permanent cosmetic makeup?

Permanent cosmetic makeup is a state of the art form of cosmetic tattooing. The specialized techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as "micropigmentation", "micropigment implantation" or "dermagraphics". The cosmetic implantation technique deposits tiny individual implants of pigment into the dermal layer of the skin.

How are permanent makeup performed?

Permanent makeup cosmetic procedures are performed using various machines and methods, including the traditional (or specialized) tattoo or coil machines, the pen or rotary machine and the non-machine or hand method.

These procedures are a process which includes the initial consultation, initial application of pigment, and usually one or two follow up visits for adjusting the shape and color or density of the pigment.

What types of permanent makeup can be performed?

  • Eyebrows
  • Eyeliner, top and bottom
  • Eyelash enhancement
  • Lipliner
  • Full lip color
  • Scar camouflage
  • Feature reconstruction
  • Areola restoration or repigmentation
  • Hair imitation
  • Skin grafts
  • Cleft/hare lip
  • Beauty marks

How long does permanent makeup last?

Gradual fading can be expected for all micro-pigmentation procedures. This varies among individuals and is dependent on the specific shade used in the procedure. Most colors last 3 to 5 years, although some may not fade for as long as 10 years. Periodic touch-ups are recommended to maintain the desired look. You can also choose to change colors of your permanent makeup. For instance, a nude lipcolor can be modified to a peachy pink; or a brown eyeliner to a black or navy hue.

Is any care required after permanent makeup?

Some swelling and redness can be expected for 24 hours following the application of permanent makeup. A cold compress helps to reduce any swelling around the eye area. The treated area must be kept clean. No makeup should be applied for several days. Some skin peeling and lightening of the applied color is normal. If any additional adjustments are desired, these will be made during your follow-up appointment.

Regular routines usually can be resumed immediately after permanent makeup application. However, swimming or vigorous exercise should be avoided for a few days. Normal healing times is between 4 to 7 days.
